Delhi gets golf-loving police chief
Neeraj Kumar, a 1976-batch IPS officer heading the Tihar Jail, will be the new commissioner of the Delhi Police. “My priority will be to ensure Delhi stays safe from terrorists and organised crime. I will make sure that its women are safe,” said Kumar, who replaces BK Gupta on Saturday.
A graduate from St Stephen’s College and an avid golfer, Kumar, 58, was chief of the Delhi Police Special Cell from 2002 to 2004. He was with the CBI from 1993 to 2002 and led the probe into the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts, arresting seven associates of Tiger Memon, one of the masterminds.
Kumar was also behind the arrest and deportation of Aftab Ansari, the alleged mastermind of the 2002 American Center attack in Kolkata.
